Bio

Welcome! Over a career spanning nearly four decades, I have worked as an equity fund manager running both dedicated Japan, and global portfolios in Tokyo, and New York. I have managed hedge funds, specialist small cap., as well as “plain vanilla” portfolios. I am a "fundamentalist," focused on the analysis, and the valuation of individual companies. At the same time, the structure of my portfolios has reflected the key themes, which I observe to be underway in my investment universe. I have conducted on site meetings with company managements in 74 countries. In 1999, my Japanese portfolios were the best performing specialist international mutual funds in the United States, appreciating by more than 300% for the year.

I worked for two leading international fund management groups before establishing my own firm in Tokyo after the second of those entities was acquired. Being acquired was a challenging, and stressful experience. After the global financial crisis, I established an office in Mongolia, listing a specialist Mongolian SPAC on the NASDAQ. In Mongolia, I was also involved in venture capital and infrastructure projects. I am particularly interested in the technology, banking, (specifically banking crises), and mining sectors, but I am also conversant with the dynamics of many other sectors.

Most recently, at the same time as working on a book about "trust," I have been advising two Japanese "Unicorns," a Fintech payments platform, and a private Japanese pharmaceutical company. In 2021, I co-authored a book about the digitalisation of money. I read widely, across anthropology, history, art, literature, science, and business. I am fluent in six languages. At both my own firm, and at my previous employers, I established and mentored teams of research analysts and fund managers. I have also been fortunate to be mentored by some inspiring colleagues during my career. I look forward to sharing my expertise and experiences, and to learning and growing together.
